About this job:

The Senior Director leads Field Medical Excellence through quality oversight and coordination across Field Excellence operations in the regions in support of the overall Medical Affairs (MA) Strategy and business objectives. This director drives development of core standards for Field Medical functions who directly engage with medical and scientific stakeholders by creating synergies and driving efficiencies across geographies and therapeutic areas and overall support to enhance Field Medical capabilities. Ensures clarity and harmonization of roles and responsibilities of the Field Medical functions across internal and external stakeholders globally Responsible to guide strategy for processes and resources on Field Medical activities to ensure global consistency and compliance, manage risk, and promote efficiency through direction, standardization, and analytics.  Provides thought leadership and senior subject matter expertise, bringing environmental insights to Astellas to impact MA performance in Field Medical across Astellas regions and functions. Proactively identifies best practices and sharing across geographies on Field Medical activities.  


Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic guidance on the development and implementation of comprehensive functional and TA strategies, operations, goals, and objectives, and ensures alignment within global and regional levels and across cross-functional stakeholders
  • Build and implement a 1-3 year Field Medical Excellence roadmap with operational and strategic objectives
  • Lead the Field Medical Excellence Matrix Team to establish and maintain high-quality standards and ensure consistent, compliant implementation and drives excellence in Field Medical operations and activities, incorporating best practices into future iterations of guidance and/or processes, systems, tools, training and/or guidance
  • Build and maintain effective strategic relationships and influence across Medical Affairs Leadership and other relevant global and regional stakeholders (e.g., Ethics & Compliance) to effectively collaborate on the development of processes to increase effectiveness in the strategic and operational needs within Field Medical
  • Participate as senior subject matter expert in corporate cross-functional initiatives addressing activities and resources relevant to Field Medical
  • Represent Astellas at global forums, conferences, and professional associations on Field Medical to contribute to shaping future industry best practices through committee participation
  • Lead the comprehensive strategy for synthesizing industry insights and regulatory guidance and drive the integration of industry best practices to revisions of MA global standards for Field Medical activities, to address changing external environment and internal business needs
  • Oversight for relevant systems and tools and with Data Repositories and Metrics & Analytics participate in system development and process redesign activities to ensure optimal performance, consistent reporting, and efficiency for the systems.
  • Assess and develop relevant training curriculum for Field Medical functions on role-specific skills and relevant systems for the Field Medical organization (ex. CRM, Veeva Vault) in conjunction with MA training functions globally and regionally and regional Field Excellence leaders
  • Provide thought leadership and coordinates with Insights & Training, regional thought leaders and subject matter experts, for bringing external environmental insights to support Field Medical performance across regions
  • Partner with Data Repositories and Metrics and Analytics on the collection, monitoring and reporting on key performance metrics related to Field Medical
  • Prioritize and evaluate progress, outcome and resources utilized for Field Medical excellence initiatives
  • Initiate and facilitate discussions with key leaders in the business to identify gaps and areas for improvement in Field Medical
  • Ability to see and communicate the vision, understand the strategy and align tactics to the strategy.

Essential experience required:

  • Substantial scientific/medical experience in pharmaceutical industry in Medical Affairs
  • Demonstrable experience working in a leadership capacity
  • Proven team/project management skills, including global/regional matrix leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Expertise in establishing cross-regional/functional standards in alignment with regulations, codes and industry standards which impact and influence multiple departments and levels of management
  • Strong problem-solving skills, strategic capabilities, project management, planning, and organization skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills in English, with an ability to interact at all levels of personnel
  • Must be willing to travel up to 30%, may require up to 15% international travel
  • Possess the ability to identify and solve tactical issues involving training across varied geographic markets and functions.
  • Possess the ability to translate solutions into viable action plans at a global level that are effectively disseminated and implemented globally within MA.


  • Advanced Degree of PharmD, MD or PhD in a scientific discipline
  • Previous Medical Science Liaison Experience
  • Direct management experience in a highly matrixed, multicultural global setting


  • Advanced Degree in a health-related science
