About This Job:


The Senior Director Medical Affairs Process & Standards Excellence is part of a global team and accountable for proactively ensuring operational excellence throughout the function. Having established our framework over the last two years we are now looking to the next stage of development, elevating the performance of the organisation by optimising efficiency, through the tightening of process and ‘decluttering’ to provide optimal performance within the Medical Affairs function.

This role will interest those individuals experienced in promoting ‘new ways of working’ with a continuous improvement mindset from a Lean/Six Sigma environment. A knowledge of Medical Affairs or the Pharmaceutical Industry is preferred either from an inhouse role or from a Consultancy


Key Responsibilities are noted below:


  • Provide vision, leadership and strategic direction for the development, maintenance and improvement of operational excellence initiatives in Medical Affairs (MA), globally, including overseeing the successful delivery of cross-functional process improvement
  • Enable stakeholders to evaluate opportunities to improve operational productivity and maximize efficiency in MA processes. The incumbent will lead best-in-class methodologies driving consistent implementation and ensure tools are in place for optimal performance aligned to MA strategies and the Corporate Strategic Plan (CSP).
  • The incumbent will bring industry insights impacting MA strategies across Astellas and ensure global consistency and compliance, manage risk, and promote process efficiency cross functionally with Leaders across the organisation
  • Collaborates with Subject Matter Experts/Process Owners to ensure Astellas develops/ maintains industry leading standards for all key MA activities, including Grants/ISRs (Investigator Sponsored Research), Advisory Engagement, Scientific Exchange, MA-led Symposia, Promotional and non-promotional Materials Reviews.
  • Provide expertise and consultative guidance on business initiatives involving systems, processes, procedures, regulations and tools.
  • Coach, counsel and train operational and functional leaders to apply, support, and develop a Continuous Improvement culture
  • Manage and develop a small team of 3 to execute a lean approach

Essential Knowledge & Experience:

  • Solid knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, Medical Affairs knowledge preferred
  • Change Management experience with evidence of successful implementation of organization wide process changes
  • Solid people management and development experience
  • A skilled Project Manager across a matrixed, multicultural global setting.
  • Expertise in establishing cross-functional standards in alignment with regulations
  • The ability to deploy lean/Six Sigma practices
  • Fluent in verbal and written busines English with the ability to see, communicate and execute a vision
  • Strong and effective strategic thinker and problem solver with high degree of emotional intelligence


Education/Qualifications:


  • Advanced degree, with preference for MBA or life science PhD or MD
  • Lean/Six Sigma qualified
